The AFF's popular Bastille Day celebration was once again held at Surreybrooke Gardens in Middletown, Maryland. Ticket prices included appetizers, lunch (main dish, side, and dessert), and drinks. Each registrant also received a complimentary raffle ticket for a surprise gift! The amazing setting and engaging conversation (en français) were free!

The AFF Celebrates Mardi Gras Join the AFF for a Mardi Gras celebration highlighting the traditional foods of New Orleans. Enjoy mask-making, music, and more as we laissez les bons temps rouler! This event is offered in partnership with Frederick Community College and is open to current AFF members only.

The American Library in Paris: A Brief Architectural History In conjunction with the Adam’s County Reads One Book book club discussion of the American Library, this presentation will provide a summary overview of the history of the American Library in Paris. Topics to be explored include the development and evolution of the library from its first location on rue de l’Élysée to its current location at rue du Général Camou. Summary discussions on the history of the library’s neighborhoods, key architectural trends, and differences between American and French library systems will provide context for the greater understanding and appreciation of the library.

AFF’s Annual Picnic at Catoctin Creek Park The AFF will be hosting our annual picnic on Sunday, 17 September 2023 at Catoctin Creek Park. Make sure to bring a French-themed item to share. Drinks will be provided by the AFF. A brief Assemblée Général will be held at 12:00pm to announce the new AFF Board. The picnic will immediately follow.

The Gothic Cathedrals of France: An Architectural History Join the Alliance Française de Frederick for an architectural history tour of France's Gothic cathedrals. This hour-long presentation will summarize the medieval history of France, discuss the innovations that led to the construction of Gothic cathedrals, and explore architectural trends. The presentation will take you on a journey to six cathedrals: Laon, Soissons, Reims, Amiens, Beauvais, and Chartres. Each stop will include a summary history of the cathedral and highlight key architectural features. By the conclusion of the presentation, you will have a better understanding of why these buildings are unique.

Finding Gardens to Visit in France Join the AFF for an informal discussion on French gardens with photographer and lecturer Michael Howes. Michael will discuss gardens in a variety of locations ranging from Bretagne and Pas de Calais to the Loire Valley and Limoux. The presentation will include the exotic, the esoteric, and the whimsical as Michael takes us on a journey of private and municipal gardens. Many of these gardens are off the beaten path; all of them are interesting and open to the public.

Tour of Best Farm at Monocacy Battlefield Learn about French colonial architecture and early French settlers of Frederick County during this unique tour designed just for AFF members and friends. A National Park Service Ranger will discuss the history of the Best Farm property (also known as L'Hermitage), with a focus on the farm’s association with Victoire Vincendière, a French immigrant from Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti).
